You can download Skype for free
Skype is communication software, this means you can talk in real time to people all over the world through your computer for free. This means if the person you are talking to is on Skype too.
Video calls are free too.
If you are a new user to Skype: they will give you a credit for ten minutes, to call any telephone in the world.
You also get: Unlimited nationwide calls - $3 per month and International calls 2.1¢ per minute.

What You Will Need
• Sound card
• A headset or speakers
• Microphone
You need to go to: Skype.com
Downloading Skype: You need a PC running Windows 2000 or XP.
Windows 2000 users require DirectX 9.0 for video calls.
Find the link that says download and press enter.
A window will open asking you what you want to do with the file, called SkypeSetup.exe.
Press enter on the run button.
You might see a confirmation message, asking if you're sure you want to run this software, press enter on the run button again.
Once the software downloads, just follow the Setup wizard.
Note: (If you are a blind user, I do not suggest downloading the tool bars).
• The title bar is at the very top of the screen.
• Right below the title bar is the menu bar; witch goes all the way across the screen horizontally.
• Right below the menu bar to the left of the screen is where your mood message is.
• Directly across on the right side of the screen is: Your events, this shows how many users want your contact information.
• Call cheaply to Mobil phones and Landlines: this will take you to a form where you can buy Skype credit, press space bar to activate.
• Right below your mood message is: where all your tabs are. This includes
• Contacts tab
• Call phones tab
• Live tab
• Skype find tab
• History tab
• Add contact tab
• Search for Skype users tab
• Create Conference tab
• There will be more tabs available depending what window you have open.
Making a test call
You should check your microphone before making your first call; you have a couple different options.
You can make a test call by using the run menu press: windows key plus the letter r. In the edit box type: skype:echo123?call and press enter.
Go in to the tools menu by pressing Alt plus T, arrow up to options and press enter or press the letter P.
Arrow down to the audio tab, Press the tab key until you locate make a test call and press enter.
This option will not be available in this menu after you make your first test call.
Adding a Contact
Go in to the tools menu by pressing alt plus t, the first option is add a contact, press enter on add a contact.
After you pressed enter on add a contact, this will put you in an edit box, this is where you would type your contacts name, e-mail address, name, or telephone number. After typing the information in the edit box tab to find and press the spacebar.
If Skype finds the information you submitted there will be a add Skype contact button available. Press space bar on the add Skype contact button.
You may also add a contact through the run menu, Press: windows key plus the letter R. In the edit box type: skypecolon)Name of contact?(question)Add
After you press the spacebar on the add contact button a dialog will pop up asking you to type a message to the contact, this is optional. After you type your message, tab to the ok button.
Now the contact will be added to your contact list, it will say beside there name that this user has not shared there details with you. When you see this message go away that means that the contact you have added has accepted you and you can call them.
In the tools menu press enter on add a contact and press enter.
After you pressed enter on add a contact you are placed in an edit box, tab one time it will say: add an ordinary phone number as a Skypeout contact, Press spacebar.
After you pressed spacebar on add an ordinary phone number as a Skypeout contact you will be placed in an edit box. This is where you would type the name of your Skypeout contact.
Tab once and this is where you would type the phone number of your Skypeout contact. (Do not put spaces in the phone number).
Tab to the add Skypeout contact and press the spacebar and the information will be added to your contact list.
Press the application key and arrow up to Set speed dial and press enter or press the letter P.
You will be in an edit box, type any number from 0 to 99, tab to ok and press spacebar.
Go in to the view menu by pressing: Alt plus V, the first option is tabs and panels press enter.
Arrow down to the address bar and make sure it is checked, if not press enter on it.
When ever you’re in your contact list all you need to do is type the first letter or the first couple letters of the name you are looking for or the speed dial number you chose.
there are several different ways to make a call in Skype. Choose one of the options below that is most comfortable for you.
Focus on the contact in your contact list and press enter.
Focus on the contact, press the application key, the first option is call contact: press enter to call.
Focus on the contact; go in to the call menu by pressing: Alt plus c. The first option is call contact, press enter to call.
You can also call a contact through the run dialog, press: windows key plus R. Type the following with no spaces: Skypecolon)contactsName?(question)call and press enter.
Go in to the tools menu by pressing: Alt plus T. Arrow up to options and press enter or press the letter p. Arrow down to hotkeys: press tab.
The first option in the hotkeys tab is a check box, (enable hotkeys) press spacebar to check or uncheck this option.
Tab over again and you will be in a list box of available hotkeys, use your up and down arrow keys to choose your options. they are as follows:
Answer call
Ignore call
Reject call – hang-up call
Focus Skype
Search for Skype users
Mute microphone
If you are interested in changing a hot key, tab once to (Change selected shortcut button) press spacebar to activate.
Here you will have four different keys to choose from:
Control key
Alt key
Shift key
Windows key
The edit box where you type the letter you would like to use.
• Note: after you type the letter in the edit box; be careful you don’t try to use your arrow keys to check what you typed. You can use the screen reading commands and the tab key to check it.
Use the arrow keys or the tab and shift tab to go through the options and use space bar to check or uncheck the keys you would like to use.
Type the desired letter or number. If you choose a letter, number that it doesn’t like you will get a message like this:000000bf
Tab to ok and press spacebar
Now you will be focused on the shortcut you just changed press the spacebar and tab to save. (If you don’t press spacebar on the shortcut after the ok button, your action will not work.
The shortcut keys are just another way to answer your calls, within Skype.
To answer a call you’re going to want to go in to the call menu, press: Alt plus C.
With the arrow keys arrow down once and press the right arrow, this will tell you who is calling and then you can press enter.
To hang-up on a call within the call menu, arrow up to the hang-up submenu and press enter twice or press the letter N and press enter.
You can also press: Ctrl plus F4, as long as you are in the call window.
You have to be very careful that you don’t use the hotkey or the call menu and simply answer a call while your talking to some one else.
When another call comes in, you can add them to the current call by: pressing the application key and arrow up to invite to conference or press the letter I.
If you would like to add another person to the call, you would focus on there name press the application key and arrow up to invite to conference or press the letter I.
To configure the sounds, go in to the tools menu by pressing: Alt plus T and arrow up to options and press enter or you can press the letter P.
In this dialog you will be using the arrow keys to navigate between the tabs. With the arrow keys arrow down to sounds and you can tab among the options.
The first option is: Choose the event you would want to change. Use the up and down arrow keys to focus on the item you want to change the sound and tab to the combo box of different sounds.
You can use the up and down arrow keys to choose a new sound, if there is not a sound you like in the list, tab to the import sounds button and search your computer for a new sound.
Note: a good place to store sounds that you like is: in my documents, there is a folder named My Skype content and when you are in the list of sounds the sounds that are in you’re my Skype content will show up.
To edit your profile press: Alt plus f and arrow down to edit my profile and press enter or press the letter E.
Navigate through this dialog with the tab key. Here you will have an edit box to put your name or any thing you would like to display.
The next two options are edit boxes, the state and city you are from.
The next option is: a combo box, use your arrow keys to focus on the country you are from.
The next four options are combo boxes use the arrow keys to choose, female or mail and your birthday.
The next five options are edit boxes:
Your web address if you have one.
Type some thing about yourself.
Your home phone.
Your office phone.
Your mobile phone.
The last options are as follows:
Send SMNs from this number button.
Change button, this is to change your picture.
Get new pictures online button.
Change your mood button.
Show my time, you could check this or uncheck.
Time zone, use your arrow keys to select your time zone.
Show how many contacts I have, you can check this or uncheck.
The last two options are to place your e-mail address and any additional email addresses you might have.
Press spacebar on the update button.
Navigate among the options with the tab key, use your arrow keys to select the radio button. Here are two sets of radio buttons. Each one has two options.
(Any One) this means that if someone found your name in a Skype search they could call you. Second optiononly people in my contact list) this means they have to be in your contact list to call you. Use your arrow keys to select one of the options as follows:
Allow calls from…, automatically receive video from…
Show that I have video to…, Chats and SMS…
The next option determents what you would like to do with your history, use your up and down arrow keys to select. (Your history is a record of your calls and chats.)
This next option is to clear all your history, press spacebar to clear history.
The next option is to show your status on the web, check or uncheck with the spacebar.
The last option is set to default button, press spacebar to activate.
Tab to save and press the spacebar to save your settings.
Go in to the view menu by pressing Alt plus V. Arrow down to sort contacts and press enter or press the letter r
Here you have two options, by name or online. Press enter on one of the options to check it.
In the view menu arrow down to hide contacts that are and press enter or press the letter H.
Off line, off line with call forwarding or not sharing there details. Press enter to check or uncheck.
Go in to the tools menu by pressing: Alt plus T and arrow up to options and press enter or press the letter P.
Tab through this dialog and the first option is: When I double click on a contact or use the address field, Start a call or when I double click on a contact or use the address field, Start a chat. Use the arrow keys to select one.
The next option is pop up a window when someone requests my details. This is a check box use the space bar to check or uncheck.
The next option is an edit box, show me as away: go ahead and type what ever amount you would like.
The next option is an edit box, type the amount of time until you won’t be available.
The next option is: do you want Skype to start when your computer starts, check or uncheck with the spacebar.
Continue tabbing through, there are several different options, update your contact details, change wall paper, choose your country and select a picture. When you have finished tab to the save button and press spacebar to save your changes.
In the call menu there is an option to create Conference call, press enter and you will be in a list view of all your contacts. You may invite up to nine people to a conference.
Focus on the contact and tab to the add button. You can also hold down the control key, using your arrow keys to go down the list of contacts and never letting go of the control key: when you focus on the contact you want to add press the spacebar. Once you have chosen all your contacts, tab to the add button and press spacebar
If you accidentally added a contact to the list that you didn’t want: just focus on the contact and tab to the remove button and press the spacebar.
You can also add telephone numbers, just tab past the add button and there will be an edit box for you to put the phone number. Tab to the add button and press spacebar.
After activating the add button, this will put you in a list view showing you the last contact you added. Tab once and this is the list of contacts you have chosen, if all the contacts you want are in this list then: tab to the start button and press spacebar.
Focus on the contact you want to send a file to, press: the application key and arrow down to send a file or press the letter N.
Once you have located the file you want to send, press the send file button.
The other way to send a file is: focus on a file press the application key and arrow up to send to menu and locate skype and press enter.
Now you will be in a list box of all your contacts, focus on the contact you want to send a file to and PRESS ENTER, tab to the send button, press spacebar.
You can also send a file to a contact through the run dialog, press: windows key plus R. Type the following with no spaces: Skypecolon)contactsName?(question)SendFile and press enter
Focus on the contact you want to send a chat message to, press the application key and arrow down once and press enter. Now you can type your message, when you are done just press enter.
You can also chat with a contact through the run dialog, press: windows key plus R. Type the following with no spaces: Skypecolon)contactsName?(question)chat and press enter
Go in to the chat menu by pressing Alt plus h.
You can arrow up to start a group chat and press enter or press the letter S.
Now you’re in a list of all your contacts, Select multiple contacts, hold down the control key, using your arrow keys to go down the list of contacts and never letting go of the control key: when you focus on the contact you want to add press the spacebar. Once you have chosen all your contacts, tab to the add button and press spacebar.
Go in to the chat menu by pressing: Alt plus H, arrow up to start a public chat and press enter or press the letter T.
Press enter on the start button to configure your public chat; the wizard will help you set the public chat up.
Go in to the chat menu and arrow up to recent chats and press enter or press the letter R, if you want to review a chat that is older then a week, enter on the contacts name.
After pressing enter this placed you in the edit box of the chat window. This is where it gets fun!
With the mouse locate: Today, this week, last 30 days or beginning. Click on one of the of the choices and you can use your regular arrow keys to review the messages.
If there is a message you want to get to quickly, tab to the list box of messages and select the one you want to book mark.
With the mouse locate bookmark and click on it. You can locate the bookmarks in the chat menu, just press the letter B.
If you never delete your history page, you will never have to do the above.
When you get a dialog that pops up and it says Hello from: and there name. You do have more options in this dialog.
Decide later, decline and share your contact details with this person, this one is checked by default press spacebar if you want to uncheck it.
There is an edit box to send that person a message.
If you recognize the persons name you can just tab to the ok button and there name will be added to your contact list.
Go in to the view menu by pressing: Alt plus V, arrow down to contact groups and press enter or press the letter O.
The first option is: enable groups, make sure this is checked by pressing the enter key.
Go back in to the view menu in the contact groups and arrow down to predefined groups and press enter or press the letter P.
Press enter on any of the following to check or uncheck.
All contacts, this will show all your contacts.
Blocked contacts.
Contacts
Recently contacted
Requesting my details
Skype contacts
SkypeOut contacts
Ungrouped
You can check all the contact groups checked. The nice thing of creating your own group, you can put Skype contacts, SkypeOut contacts, and etc. all in one group.
The last option in the view menu under group contacts is: create new group, press enter on this or press the letter C.
After you entered on the create new group, you are in an edit box, type the name of your new group. There is no need to press enter; you will be placed back in the window where you started.
To navigate among the groups press: Ctrl plus page up or page down.
To add a contact to your new group, focus on a contact in one of the groups you have active. Use the common windows keyboard command of Ctrl plus C to copy.
Now go back in to your group with Ctrl plus page up or page down and paste the contact by pressing: Ctrl plus V.
To get back and forth between your contact list and the history list press: Ctrl plus tab.
The history list contains: any call you have made, all calls you have missed and received. It also shows all the chats you have sent and received.
There is an option in the tools menu under options that will allow you how many days you want to keep your history or not to save any history.
The easiest way to remove your history is to simply press: Ctrl plus A and press the delete key.
Skype Live are public conversations; you can listen in on conversations or join the conversations.
To enable the Skype Live page go in to the view menu and press enter on tabs and panels, press enter on Live to check it if it is not checked.
Press Ctrl plus tab to locate the Live page, this page looks like a web page, use the tab key to navigate or use the screen reader commands to access links.
SkypeFind is a collection of businesses recommended by the Skype community that you can search when you need a good suggestion. Use the search window to find the business you are looking for or recommend a business you like if it's not already there.
To make this page available, go in to the view menu and press enter on tabs and panels: locate the Skype find and press enter to check it if it is not checked.
Press Ctrl plus tab to locate the Skype Find page, this page looks like a web page, use the tab key to navigate or use the screen reader commands to access links.
Skype prime beta is: a service skype provides. If you are knowledgeable in certain areas you can make money off this service, there is no startup fee it is free to sign up.
To access this service go in to the account menu by pressing: Alt plus A and arrow up to Skype prime beta service and pres enter or press the letter K.
Skype does keep 30% of your charges, so figure your rate around that.
Here you will find several edit boxes, fill out the necessary information and Skype will have your account setup in about ten minutes.
You will need to use the mouse to access the charge caller button.
